Throughout history many self taught gardeners were unable to create there own distinct style, something new, so copying others with a slight variation became quite common, but gardens should have an idea or a purpose behind them, a sense of belonging.

Lancelot ‘Capability ‘Brown had imagination, he wanted to create a ‘place ‘ with a distinct flavour of its own, space, planting open areas of earth and water, a bringing together of elements that make it special. This came at a perfect time in history, people with money and wealth wanted to show it off, Capability Brown allowed them to do that with vast parkland estates that meant you could look as far as the eye could see just by standing outside your mansion. It gave landowners a stature of strength.

The problem with these was that to create this show, the kitchen gardens, flowered borders, colour and fragrance and movement itself ( as created by previous designers )was removed, people lost work, and through showing there wealth put some down into poverty.

Not all of us are mad about putting loads of plants in our garden for many reasons, don’t like gardening, no time to manage, lifestyle, prefer things to be simple and straightforward. Well, that can be achieved by looking at the contemporary side to design. Use those straight lines to make a statement, a distinct line to your house from the drive, square shaped seating area with raised areas around or even a small rill for the cooling effect of water, its all possible with just a little imagination and careful planning.
