Break the rules, be different, be you

Designing and creating a garden area is not all about somebody coming in and telling you what you should or shouldn’t have. The garden needs to be a transition between you and the designer to focus on what you are looking for, your thoughts and ideas, and for the designer to use their experience to evaluate and advise on best way forward.

These spaces are bespoke to you, your mark, your personality, your lifestyle it works for you, and with a careful balance between plants and landscape materials it can become enjoyable, manageable, usable.

Design Reasons

Gardens are places where you want to be drawn out to, a reason, a need, a space but to have that a garden needs to come alive. It needs to show interest in its shape, its colour, its usability and growth. None of us like to stand still, we like movement and a well planned garden can give you this.

With garden design the process is quite straightforward - Consultation-Brief-Site Survey-Sketched Ideas-Main Design-Quotes-Construction its simple really. So why are designs so different in pricing.

A lot depends on the type of design drawing the designer chooses. 3D, 2D visuals, Cad, Axonometric they all take time and some intense drawing which comes into the price.

Design isn’t always about vast changes to your garden and having to re-mortgage to pay for it. No, design is about having an area to enjoy, watch it mature and grow with you, see the changes it makes from the plants and flowers, through the seasons leading you to areas for you to explore and learn. It doesn’t have to be created all at once, there are times when some things are best done in specific seasons, some plants are only available in certain seasons so be clever and watch it grow around you.

Plan ahead, create the right feature at the right time to create the right result

As a Horticulturist and Designer I evaluate the type of plants suitable for your garden, right plant, right conditions and as you don’t need to be a gardener to enjoy the garden I am able to position plants that will almost always look after themselves and you won’t need a degree to look after them either.

There are many rules you are supposed to adhere to when you look at a garden design course, no different from a gardening course whoever it might be with.

Breaking these rules allows for a more personalised, dynamic approach to your garden.

Why can’t the tall plants be in the front,

Instead of planting in grids use natural planting ( called gaggles ) in groups of 3,5 or 7,

Contemporary doesn’t mean dead straight lines,

Use chaotic colours to bring out your personality,

Your likes, your loves rather than a colour theme,

Don’t mass plant leave some empty space ( it creates an area of calm, a controlled area ),

Hide some items within the garden itself rather than have a major focal point,

Large leaved plants in small spaces can make a garden more intimate and jungle like rather than smaller.

Break the rules, it will reflect you as an individual.

Traditional - Rule Breaking- Contemporary - Natural - Cottage
