Bare borders to Spring to Autumn colour

These two borders were just bare areas when I was asked to plan some summer colour, and at first it looked quite straightforward. After measuring up and taking a few notes I sat back and assessed the whole garden area. There were quite a few trees in this garden as it had fields around and was mainly a farming area, so being a little open wind may be an issue and the soil was not the first type of soil you would relish digging over. i decided to make a few notes in the studio and come back again. When I got back the weather was a little more cloudy and I noticed the left border was more shady through the day than the right border, this sort of put a stop to having matched borders as we would need different plants for each one. This came to light as I did the border plans and because the client required a more perennial theme I did add three evergreen shrubs to each border so as to reflect life in what otherwise would be a bare area for about 3 months of the year.

The colour we captured was perfect, and it fitted in well with a wedding where people could walk from the marquee around the garden ( September ) and enjoy the life the garden gave. I planted a few more shrubs, plants in he shrub borders I created and the Roses in the shade under the trees has done remarkably well, especially under the Laburnum Vossii in early summer.
