What could you be doing this month ?

At this time of year for most of us its a case of finding the right day, and weather to get out and do some managing. When you look out the window remember that what you do now will have a big influence on your plants next summer. The soil is a vital aspect of every garden, whether in pots, borders, planters it needs looking after.

So, lets look at the borders and what they need. With the ever changing climate we are having to compete very often with large downpours and although many reservoirs may need it our plants don’t, they breathe through their roots so too much water can have a devastating effect. Fork or dig over the soil to create a broken surface, this allows air and the rain to penetrate into the soil, avoids puddles on the surface and the looser soil means worms move easier, roots penetrate better. ( Excellent for the possible dry weather later).

Then we can mulch the border with some organic matter, just loosely across the border, if you have plants in then it doesn’t hurt to cover then slightly as most perennials will have young growth and this will help keep them healthy until they burst into growth in the spring.
