My Diary April 2026
What am I doing this month ?
As April approaches and the weather brightens up, days are a little longer, the odd spot in the day when its nice and warm, your now keen to get out.
But, don’t be fooled by the weather. the ground is still fairly cold to new roots, the light in the evenings is still to short for your long light summer planting. Prepare the ground, hoe, fork or dig over the top couple of inches it will improve aeration, help drainage when we have a heavy spring shower, and allow your plants to breathe.
I can almost guarantee that summer bedding plants will make an appearance in garden centres and nurseries by the end of the month. Unless you have a greenhouse or somewhere to protect them from the cold evenings then DON’T BUY THEM.
Although its not likely to kill them, ( frost still possible ) it will discolour the leaves and they will be delayed in there growth. They will probably recover but your display for the summer will be nothing like you intended.
So, leave planting until the second week in May, the grounds warmer, the air lighter and from the 1st of June we can look forward to some warm summer evenings.
After all, the clue is in the name Summer Bedding, plant in May and it would be Spring bedding and thats done in September.

When I go out in the mornings regardless of the weather I know gardens are like friends, they need a helping hand in even the toughest times, its February now but I know when I look at them in late spring and early summer they will reward me for the hard work and passion I put in, its a purpose not a job.

Lets hope next week will be a little more workable.
Have a good week, Mark
